“I was reared in my mother’s atelier and saw those objects everyday. Of course that affected me.” Lena Lervik is a classically trained sculptor, educated in the best schools in Sweden and Europe. She works with materials like bronze and terracotta, and Lervik spent large parts of his childhood in her lively studio. Here, he has returned to this important site to make this monumental, iconic bronze chair. Its texture is created by the artist taking an axe to the gypsum sketch. The result has echoes of Giacometti’s sparse bronze shapes, combined with all those sculptors who through the ages have worked in this timeless material. It also reminds us of the genius construction and simplicity of the design of the basic chair.
