The invention of 3D printing has revolutionized the design world. Lervik was an early adopter with a printer in his studio and as one of the first to give lectures on the topic. Terra goes even farther in its effort to affect the course of the medium — it is free. Anyone can download the digital blueprints and print their own object. The idea came out of Lervik’s 2009 TED talk, where he argued that the design industry must soon create its own version of Spotify. In order to limit the environmental effects of furniture manufacturing, the chair’s producer Design House Stockholm is looking for small local carpentries and laser print shops interested in collaborating around this pioneering idea. The end result as exhibited here brings to mind the playfulness of both pop art and Yayoi Kusama’s dots and colors.
